4B Movement
The 4B Movement is a non-violent movement of civil resistance that challenges traditional gender expectations and patriarchy through four principles: avoiding marriage (Bihon), childbearing (Bichulsan), dating (Biyeonae), and sexual relationships with men (Bisekseu).
This feminist movement emerged as a reaction to systemic sexism, violence and restrictive gender roles that position women primarily as men's properties rather than as individuals with personal and professional aspirations.
Originated from South Korea in the mid-to-late 2010s, this movement is now global.
What are 4B Movement Principles ?
The 4 'no' are (4B 운동, 4B undong):
Avoiding Heterosexual Marriage (Bihon 비혼)
Avoid Childbearing (Bichulsan 비출산)
Avoid Dating (Biyeonae 비연애)
Avoid Heterosexual Sexual Relations (Bisekseu 비섹스)
Is There Other Principles ?
No, the original 4B movement has no other principle.
However, here’s a reminder on how to successfully engage with the 4Bs.
Financial Independence:
Pursue financial autonomy by keeping separate finances and establishing an exit strategy. Seek self-sufficiency in all aspects of your life.
Network:
Support and connect with women-owned businesses and women-centered networks.
Sexual objectification:
Don't put yourself where YOU are the product - whether physically or digitally.
Education:
Commit to self-education and a deeper understanding of yourself and the world around you.
The 4B movement can create hate crime. Be careful.
Supporting or praticing the 4B can be dangerous.
Expressing publicly that you support or practice 4B makes you a target:
The practice of 4B inevitably attracts violence, hatred or harassment from manhood. It's important to protect your life first. In most places, it's best to keep this behavior under wraps.
Protects the anonymity of women who practice 4B:
Even if you don't agree with this movement, act to protect the lives of women who practice 4B. Don't encourage harassment, rape and death for it. Otherwise you're perpetuating the reasons for 4B's existence.
How can I join the 4B movement?
Pratice:
You join the movement simply by practicing the 4B principles.
Free from leadership:
Do not under any circumstances accept the authority of a person auto-proclamed to lead this movement. Follow your own choices.
Misinformation:
Don't give credence to information that aims to reduce the 4B movement to stupid, racist, transphobic people or just a sex strike.
Your appearance:
The need to change one's appearance and clothing is absolutely not a 4B rule. Don't give credence to information that says you should shave your hair or reduce your beauty. Follow your own choices.
Protect people and 4B movement:
Don't encourage hate speech and violence.
